Road Trip Home
The next morning I woke up with a knock on the door, the previous owner was waiting with coffee and a welcome to breakfast.( The last two posts took place on June 16-18, 2010) We sat sat down in their kitchen and his wife explained some more of the interior set up.He pulled out an atlas to show me a short cut to avoid Chicago and save several hours. We discussed a few more things about the bus and then it was time to go. He backed the bus out of the driveway and parked on the street. I climbed in and he pointed me in the right direction, wished a safe trip and we said our goodbye's. At that point I was driving MY bus back to Houston. I was going slow and very careful, so far it wasn't bad, then onto the two-lane highway. This was were it started to get scary, driving a 35 foot vehicle wider and heavier than a car plus airbrakes for the first time is quite an strange experience.I did'nt want to go to fast until I got used to it, soon a string of cars were tailing me, let 'em pass. Most did and I am sure they were cursing about," dumb people who drive motorhomes around without a care in the world, just going slow to annoy the real drivers with important places to go." I used to be one of those car drivers. Now I was complaining about the big hurry all these people were in. I kept heading down Indiana Highway 2 from LaPorte to some small town where I was supposed to turn right and then over to I-57 in Illinois. " We took this shortcut all the time," the previous owner told me before I drove off, "Just make a left at Valparaiso then a quick right after Hebron and you'll be on the interstete in no time." No time meant getting lost.
